Park City recently launched its electric bike share program — one of the first in the country. The program, in its first phase, offers 88 pedal-assisted electric bikes that are available for rent at nine charging stations throughout Park City and the Snyderville Basin.
The bike fleet is part of a Summit County ballot initiative passed in November, and is also part of an effort to have a net-zero carbon foot print by 2022. The fleet is also a complement to the county’s new all-electric bus fleet.
“Today marks a giant leap in our efforts to provide viable travel alternatives for our residents and visitors,” said Caroline Rodriguez, transportation planning director for Summit County, during the unveiling of the new system.
“This is one of 850 bike-share programs throughout the world,” said Park City transportation planning manager Alfred Knotts. He continues, “These types of programs also further our community in a healthy and active way.”
Park City Mayor Jack Thomas said, “I think the e-bikes are a way to reduce traffic and congestion, be responsible about energy, and get people a different experience about what our community is.”
About the Bikes
Each of the bikes features a pedal-assisted lithium battery to add powered assistance to the rider. Each of these 80-pound bikes can reach a top speed of about 14 mph and can go for about 60 miles between charges.
The e-bikes and their battery powered pedal assist system allows riders to easily conquer a bike ride through the hills of the Park City and Kimball Junction area. The program offers 45-minute rides for $2. There’s an additional $2 charge for each half hour past the initial 45 minutes. Weekly passes for $18 and monthly passes for $30 are available, as is an annual pass for $90.
The bikes are available at charging stations located at the Newpark Plaza, Kimball Junction Transit Center, Tanger Outlets, Canyon Corners, Canyons Transit Hub, Park Avenue Bike Station, Park City Library, the Prospector neighborhood, and the Old Town Transit Center.
