Just a few days ago, Park City Mountain Resort announced that it would be pushing opening day back. Opening day was slated for Friday, November 18; however, the new opening day is now November 26. This delay in opening is unfortunately due to a lack of snow and unseasonably warm temperatures.

These warm temperatures have precluded snowmaking operations. PCMR’s COO Bill Rock stated in a press release, “While unseasonably warm weather has not made it possible for recent snowmaking operations, our team is ready to fire up the snow guns at every opportunity as weather gets cooler. We look forward to opening as soon as we feel we can provide our guests with good quality snow conditions.”

There has been a lack of snow here in the mountains of Park City, which has led to many of us wondering when the ski season will truly start. According to Brian McInerney, a National Weather Service hydrologist, the area has no snow. He continued by saying to the Park Record “We’re devoid of any snow at all . . . When we measure snow, there’s an absence of snow at this time.”

Historically, this is not the first time opening day has been delayed until after Thanksgiving. During the 2008-2009 season, opening day was rescheduled to open after Thanksgiving. Interestingly, that year the resort then received more than 444 inches, which was well above the average of 357 inches.

The Park City area did receive snowfall on Thursday, and more snow is expected. With this snow and corresponding cold front, the resorts are expected to increase their snowmaking operations.

Other Resorts Slated to Open Soon

As far as other area resorts opening days, they are on schedule. The Canyons Base area is expected to open on November 26, while Deer Valley Resort is scheduled to open on December 3.
