The weekend is here! Well, when you’re visiting Park City, the words, “I’m bored” will never be uttered!  There are plenty of Park City activities to keep you busy during your stay in the Wasatch Back – we’ve got something to make everyone smile.

Park City Activities this Weekend

The Basin Recreation Center has just the thing to get you out to enjoy the beautiful spring-like weather we’ve been experiencing. On February 25th, Basin Recreation will host a guided snowshoe hike.  Interested parties should meet at the Park City Community Church and will be snowshoeing their way down Rob’s Trail. Hikes last approximately 1-2 hours, depending on the trail selected.  Basin Recreation asks that you leave the dogs at home for this function.  Snowshoes suggested.  Yak tracks or boots may be sufficient.  Check out www.basinrecreation.org for more information.

The Park City Performing Arts Foundation always brings excellent productions to Park City each season.  This Saturday night, February 25th, at 7:30PM, the Foundation presents Nellie McKay, and her performance entitled, “I want to Live”.   Inspired by the 1958 movie of the same name, “I Want to Live!” combines Ms. McKay’s virtually unlimited gifts as a singer, songwriter, actress, pianist, ukulele player, mimic, satirist and comedian into a show that is much deeper than its surface might suggest,” writes Stephen Holden for The New York Times. Children under 16 are half price and seniors receive a 20-percent discount. You must visit the box office to receive discounted tickets.  Visit www.ecclescenter.org for further details.

Perhaps the Nellie McKay performance has you wanting to explore your creative side a little more.  Good news!  There is a new gallery on Main Street in Park City.  Nature photographer Willie Holdman has opened up a gallery at 580 Main Street – the previous address for Gallery Mar, who has moved up to 436 Main.  Willie is a Utah native, back country skier and nature enthusiast whose art stunningly showcases the wild places in the Rockies and, to a lesser extent, the Himalayas and other high-elevation locales.  Hand-made frames compliment his photos, some of which span an entire wall. In the past, Willie has sold his work through various interior designers and home décor shops but felt it was time to launch his own gallery.  Visit him on Main Street or view his catalog at www.willieholdman.com.

After indulging in all pf the aforementioned sophistication, you may feel the need to rough things up a bit. Perfect!  The Pioneers hockey team are in town this weekend.  Cheer on the fellas participating in this elite amateur league that is sure to bring you adreniline-filled entertainment! The Pioneers roster is comprised of former professional, collegiate and skilled amateur players from within the intermountain region as well as several who have travelled from various locations within the United States. Check out the action on the ice this Saturday, February 25th at 7:30PM.  You can learn more about the Pioneers by visiting www.pcpioneershockey.com.

Looking for a reason to celebrate in Park City?  Fat Tuesday hits this week on the 21st, and Park City knows how to revel in this long-standing spring tradition!  Many of the local restaurants will be hosting Fat Tuesday parties – bringing a little bit of the Big Easy to the Wasatch Back.

Always a favorite for festive Park City events, check out the High West Distillery for your Fat Tuesday merriment.  Beginning at 4:30PM, High West will be offering special small plate options steeped in Louisiana style, and I’m guessing, a little High West Whiskey too!  The distillery will be decked out in Mardi Gras décor to add that extra New Orleans flair.  Visit their website, www.highwest.com for more information.

Visit Easy Street for a True Fat Tuesday Style Party

Another solid option is Easy Street, located in the heart of Park City’s Historic Old Town district.  Easy Street will be throwing a true Fat Tuesday style party, so don your beads and float on over to Easy Street for a sampling of traditional New Orleans fare.  Chef Scott, Easy Street’s Executive Chef, will be preparing Jambalaya, Gumbo, and tasty Beignets for a post-meal treat.  Easy Street will also have live Cajun music in the evening to keep the Mardi Gras spirit going strong. Call (435) 658-2500 for further details.

After the revelry of Fat Tuesday is behind you, Park City has a few other worthwhile happenings this week.  Did you miss out on the Film Festival this year?  Lucky for you, the Park City Film series is showing “Revenge of the Electric Car” from 2/24-2/26 at the Jim Santy auditorium.  Film run times are Saturday at 8PM and Sunday at 6PM.  This 2006 film touches on the troubled history of General Motor’s EV1 electric car that disappeared from the market under mysterious circumstances.  For more information regarding the film and upcoming film series offerings, visit www.parkcityfilmseries.com .

Spring Concerts at Canyons Resort

A favorite of locals and visitors alike are the free spring concerts at Canyons resort.  The Showdown Spring Concert Series always brings local, regional and national musical act favorites to the ski town masses in Canyons resort village center.  This week, on the 25th at 3PM, Ogden’s own “Shaky Trade” will be rocking the stage with their own blend of rock and funk.  Visit www.thecanyons.com for show information.

Keeping in line with the concert theme, Silver Star Café will be presenting Park City Limits featuring Rick D’ aigle from 8PM-11PM on 2/24.  Rick is known for his gypsy-jazz guitar stylings.  While you enjoy the show, make sure to indulge in some of Silver Star’s self-titled “American Roots Cuisine” like the Mushroom Stroganoff or the Pan Roasted Niman Ranch Pork Loin.  You can find Silver Stars menus as well as event calendar at www.silverstarcafe.com .

Finally, if the above isn’t enough to keep you busy, and you’re looking for something a little more highbrow, there is always the Park City School of Wine.  Classes are offered Friday and Saturday nights (except holidays) from 6:15-7:00 p.m. at the Silver Baron Lodge in lower Deer Valley. Class is $25 per person with a maximum of 20 people. Classes do sell out so sign up early! For more information or to register, head to www.foxschoolofwine.com.
