Park City is a city known for its outdoor adventures. During the winter the many Park City activities make the area becomes a skier’s paradise, and during the spring, summer, and fall the mountains surrounding the city are full of trails for hikers, bikers, and their furry, four-legged friends. If you are visiting during the winter months, here are some of Park City’s “hidden gems” to check out.

Spend a Day on the Mountain

There is a free shuttle service from downtown Park City to the top of the mountain. Make sure to stop at Miners Camp mid-way down the mountain to warm up with some hot food and drinks. The restaurant serves cafeteria-style food like pizza, chicken nuggets, and gyros. Miners Camp also has a full bar with a selection of local and regional craft beers. After a day on the mountain, take the Home Run Trail back to the base of the mountain. This long, easy trail offers amazing views and is the perfect way to end your day.

Take a Stroll Down Park City Main Street

Main Street is the lifeline of Park City. The street runs through the middle of the downtown area and is lined with boutiques and some of the town’s finest restaurants.

Riverhorse on Park City Main Street is a popular location among locals. This fine dining institution is one of the most popular on the historic street and people from all over the world come to try its unique cuisine. Riverhorse’s rotating menu features seasonal American-style dishes. Reservations are strongly encouraged, and the restaurant opens every day at 5 p.m.

If you are looking for a less formal option, consider eating at Purple Sage. This casual Western-style restaurant is located in the historic Rocky Mountain Bell Telephone building, which was built in the early 1880s. The menu features classic comfort foods with an innovative twist like seared duck, chili mac n’ cheese, and Yukon gold mashed potatoes.

Fall is an extraordinary time to take a trip to Park City. The weather is beginning to cool down from the summer heat, and the fall foliage is starting to change color. Park City can be quite busy during the winter and summer, but during the fall the town slows down, allowing you to really enjoy the amazing cuisine and natural beauty of Park City. If you are planning a fall getaway, here are some of the best things to do in Park City during the fall.

Take a Hot Air Balloon Ride

Park City is gorgeous during the fall. The forests and mountains surrounding the city are varying shades of reds, oranges, and yellows, and the cool, clear, dry air lets you see for miles. One of the best ways to take in all this beauty is from above the tree line in a hot air balloon. You can look out over the Wasatch Mountains and Park City as your balloon rises over the Kamas Valley. There are two different companies in Park City to choose from, Skywalker Balloon Company and Park City Balloon Adventures, and each offers trips starting at sunrise when the weather is the most predictable.

Take a Hike

If you would like to admire Park City’s fall foliage from the ground, there are plenty of hiking and mountain biking trails in the area. Guardsman Pass offers some of the most spectacular views in the area. The hike to Clayton Peak is moderately steep, but only 2.5 miles to the top. Once you reach the top you’ll have stunning 360-degree views of the Deer Creek Reservoir, Mt. Timpanogos, and all the beautiful fall foliage.

Dine About

This annual event lasts for nine days in October and showcases all the best cuisine of Park City. More than two dozen restaurants participate, and their menus feature two-course lunches for $10-$15 a person and three-course dinners for $20-$40 a person. The menus change daily and feature unique cuisine inspired by the fall season. This event is a fantastic way to try some of Park City’s finest dining establishments.

Fly Fishing

Fall is one of the best times of year for fly fishing, and Park City is near many world-class fishing spots. The Lower Provo River, Middle Provo River, and Weber are all within about 30 minutes from downtown and are known for their trout fishing. There are many different shops in town where you can rent all the gear you need for fly fishing—some of them also offer lessons and expeditions. Park City Fly Fishing Co. offers half day and full day trips with a guide who knows the best spots in the area and can help you with your fly fishing technique.

Park City Halloween

Each year for Park City Halloween celebrates with a costume parade for dogs. Shops along Main Street open their doors at 3 p.m. to trick-or-treaters and the dog parade starts at 5 p.m. Both humans and dogs are encouraged to dress up for the parade.

If you are looking for a spookier way to celebrate Halloween, take a tour with Park City Ghost Tours. The tour will take you down Main Street and Park Avenue, where you will hear all about the spooky past of Park City and the ghosts that continue to haunt this old Western town.
